This week on the podcast the boys cast a wide net. The Gold Cup Final is dealt with off the top and then it is off to Europe to look at another title for Spain – this time it is the 2011 UEFA Under 21s. The final topic is the Women’s World Cup currently underway in Germany and in particular how do we go about analysing the women’s game and why – in the case of Canadian TV – do we have two men acting as lead analysts?

Bobby & Eoin, as a USMNT fan and supporter, I was pleased with your coverage of the Gold Cup final and thought your analysis was interesting and honest. I agree with a great many points you made, but I was disappointed that neither of you really took up the topic of Bob Bradley, in regards to the future of our team. Specifically, do you feel that he will/should remain Manager during W.C. qualification and the tournament itself? Do you feel that another Manager should/could be brought in to take the USMNT to a higher level of play? What sort of Manager should be sought? What sort of qualifications should he have? What sort of skills/tactics/experience could a new Manager bring? And if you believe that a new Manager is necessary for the USMNT to move on, do you think it WILL happen in the next 4 years? Finally, do you have any suggestions as to whom it could/should be? I would really appreciate it if either/both of you could discuss some of the above. Thanks.

What is wrong with men being involved in the coverage of the Women’s World Cup? Just as women are welcome in the coverage of the men’s game, I think your criticisms are totally unfair.

I can’t comment on the CBC coverage but I think Dobson and Forrest have earned the right to be there. Here are some reasons.

    1. They have shown a commitment and interest in the women’s game. They feature it almost every week on Soccer Central (I can’t say the same for your podcast or Fox Soccer Report.)

    2. I believe statistics in the past suggest about 70% of the viewers will be men anyway.

Personally, I think having men on the coverage shows they are taking the sport seriously and are encouraging the male viewers to do likewise. I see nothing condescending or disrespectful in their presentation.

  3. Gillian says:

I have a question for Bobby & Eoin: why wouldn’t you be critical of players in the women’s game if they make mistakes?

  4. wengler says:

ESPN seems to have a better balance of women to men analysts.

I like it that they don’t only have popular figures of the 1999 Women’s World Cup, but have also managed to work in past players of other national teams. The only men they seem to have are former coaches and their main soccer anchor.

Also great podcast. I didn’t mind that it was 55 minutes.
