I received a tweet this morning that included a challenge. Not sure where it came from although the Guardian’s Spanish football correspondent was quoted in the e mail.

This what I came up with in a 4-3-3 formation.

Schmeichel $2; Lahm $1, Baresi $4, Beckenbauer $5, Fachetti $3; Garrincha $3, Neeskkens $4, Maradona $5; Van Basten $2, Romario $1, Mueller $3. Total $33

You are also asked to tweet your $33 team with the hashtag #$33AllTimeTeam

Hope you enjoy.

    I’ll only use players I’ve seen play (4-2-3-1)

    Schmeichel $2
    Thuram $4 Desailly $2 Baresi $4 Brehme $1
    Rikjaard $3 Makelele $1
    Cristiano Ronaldo $5 Zindane $3 Messi $5
    Van Basten $2

  2. Rob says:

    I’m not sure on the formation that I would use but I would go with:

    Schmeichel $2

    Lahm $1 Desailly $2 Cannavaro $2 Roberto Carlos $4

    Zidane $3 Xavi $5 Makalele $1 Iniesta $1 Ronaldo (Por) $5

    Messi $5

    My only question, well not my only just the most pressing, is how is Xavi worth 5 and Iniesta only 1?

  3. Alberta Gooner says:

    I wondered about some of the values, Rob. It appears to be highly subjective and you could put together a pretty outstanding team of players who are “frees” under this list.

  4. RealDaveLather says:

    Bobby, glad you enjoyed this. Putting this together was the best two hours I’ve ever spent at work.

    Here’s my more or less 4-3-3- Perhaps 4-1-2-3.

    Facchetti, Cannavaro, Nesta, Lahm
    Rijkaard, Pirlo, Xavi
    Cruyff, Pele, Maradona

  5. Rob says:

    AG-Hahaha this could be a Fifa14 ranking list…

  6. Alberta Gooner says:

    You could make a pretty bloody good team with these players:

    Kahn/Cech/van der Saar

    Hagi/Kaka/Gerrard/Giggs/Weah/Gullit/Scholes/Figo/Rui Costa/Rivaldo

  7. Astronomer says:

    I am a very defensive-minded guy and so, naturally, my favorite formation is the defensively solid Christmas Tree formation — 4-3-2-1.

    So here goes the 4 – 3 – 2 – 1:

    Schmeichel 2;

    Lahm 1; Beckenbauer 5; Desailly 2; Brehme 1;

    Matthaus 5; Makalele 1; Rijkaard 3;

    Maradona 5; Zidane 3;

    Pele 5.

  8. Astronomer says:

    Well, someone has to coach/manage the above 4-3-2-1 team. In my humble opinion, the best person for that is Aime Jacquet, France’s 1998 world championship-winning manager.

    Aime Jacquet used the Christmas Tree formation (4-3-2-1) and its close variant, the 4-3-1-2, throughout the 1998 tournament and the result, as they say, is history.

  9. Alberta Gooner says:

    Pretty solid side, Astronomer. Arrigo Sacchi would be my pick to manage my side.

  10. RealDaveLather says:

    I think Schmeichel is the real value in the keeper spot, no weaknesses of any kind.

    Astronomer I don’t think that team would ever be scored on… Except mmaayyybe by my team 😉 Who’s pushing futher forward in the midfield… Matthaus or Rijkaard?

  11. Mike says:

    A team that should beat all others from the available choices, if the players were playing at their CURRENT LEVEL OF FITNESS June 2014 😀

    GK: Buffon

    Def: Philip Lahm, Alessandro Nesta, Iker Casillas (have to draft him for this position, I figure he’s more mobile than Buffon)

    MF: Xavi, Ronaldinho, Iniesta, Pirlo

    FW: Messi, Zlatan, C.Ronaldo

    -interesting reading some quick Wikipedia descriptions to find out a bit about each player on the lists, and which ones were still in the game. I’m only a fairly recent watcher of games (2008+), so I’m not very familiar with the accomplishments of most
