Answers to questions 11-20

A-11, Dinamo Bucharest (Romania) beat Crusaders (Northern Ireland) 11-0 back in 1973.

A-12, Benfica (Portugal) cruised to an 18-0 win against Dudelange (Luxembourg) during the 1965/66 competition.

A-13, from September 2005 to May the next year Arsenal did not concede a goal for 995 minutes and ten complete games.

A-14, it has happened three times with Steaua Bucharest the last to do so in 1986 while Real Madrid was the first in 1966. Celtic also managed the feat in 1967 with all eleven starters born within a 30-mile radius of Glasgow.

A-15, for the 1957/58 European Cup Real Madrid qualified as winners of the previous season’s competition while Sevilla was awarded a spot as runners up to Real in the Liga. The two teams faced in each other in the quarter-finals with Real Madrid winning 10-2 on aggregate. The first leg resulted in an 8-0 win for Real Madrid and the score still stands as the most lopsided score in a European Cup quarter final.

A-16, it took until 1999/00 to happen with Real Madrid playing Valencia. Two others followed relatively quickly – Milan v Juventus (2002/03) and Manchester United v Chelsea (2007/08).

A-17, until this season it was Milan’s Paolo Maldini played 139 games over the length of his career. But Raul overtook Maldini and has now played in 143 matches for Real Madrid and Schalke.

A-18, Clarence Seedorf has been on the winning side four times and with three different teams based in three different countries. First up was Ajax (Netherlands) in 1995; next was Real Madrid (Spain) in 1998; finally Milan in 2003 and again in 2007. He has also finished on the losing side twice.

A-19, Lazio goalie Marco Ballotta lined up against Real Madrid in December 2007 only 113 days short of his 44th birthday.

A-20, not many would able to name Péter Palotás of Vörös Lobogó SE (Hungary).  It came against Anderlecht of Belgium in September 1955. Vörös Lobogó beat Anderlecht 10-4 on aggregate but lost to beaten finalists Stade Reims in the next round. Vörös Lobogó is better known as MTK Budapest or MTK Hungaria.

Wow, what did they pump into the water in and around Glasgow? It’s incredible to produce that kind of talent in such a small geographical area.

  2. Soccerlogical says:

    Dear Mr. McMahon,

Several of the parents have concerns that your recent “quizzes” are too difficult for our children. If possible, please provide more remedial lesson plans and tests. Remember, most of the posters here ride the small yellow bus to school!

  3. Bishopville Red says:

ALEX: Isn’t it obvious? IRN BRU, of course!

  4. They must have changed the recipe over the last 40 years. Maybe they tried a New Coke thing without telling us.

Hands up the North Americans who have tasted Scotland’s other national drink?

  5. SL – it can also be looked upon as educational. I know I learned a thing or twenty putting it together.

  6. Blake says:

How long until Abramovich buys Seedorf?

  7. Blake – I won’t tell if you don’t.
