In 2007 a key commitment in Michel Platini’s platform to win the Presidency of UEFA, the governing body for soccer in Europe, was to spread the wealth. Under his predecessors western and southern Europe had benefited from hosting the majority of major international tournaments and the finals of club competitions.

    Bobby. An interesting article. I have another comparison for you. Of the top 40 Eurocup players picked on ESPN, only one was non-Western European, Luka Modric. Automatically, all of these fans were bashing his selection that he is overrated and another Spanish player or Frenchman should have been picked instead of him. Not only that he belongs there, but it is ridiculous to see such bias and general feeling that all the talent comes from Western Europe. There are plenty of talented non-Western European players and I genuinely believe that Croatia will go through that group as they have plenty of talent and determination to do so. I cannot wait to see them take on Italy again.
    I am hoping that you will write a blog that will let us pick the winners of the groups so we can analyze the groups in more detail.
