Like that scene from the movie “The Jerk” (when Steve Martin’s character flips out with glee at the arrival of the new phone book), THE PREMIER LEAGUE IS HERE! THE PREMER LEAGUE IS HERE! In Part 1 of the BPL Season Preview, Bobby and Eoin start at the bottom and work their way up… taking a look at the three newly promoted teams, and those teams that made heavy weather of retaining Premier League status last season. Before EA Sports’ FIFA, before PES, there was Sensi.  Eoin let slip his fondness for Sensible Soccer (I think I found Eoin’s old avatar – pictured above), and that turns out to be the theme of this weeks pod. With so little going on in the transfer market at the moment, Bobby & Eoin ponder whether or not european clubs are finally acting sensibly. Financial Fair Play, and the economy in general, seems to have many clubs a bit freaked out at the moment, and the big summer trend may be for ‘loans & make-weights’ rather than ‘blockbusters’ – at least that’s Bobby’s hunch.

Well,well,well… look who decided to hole-up in the studio and record another podcast!  Sorry we’ve been away for a couple of weeks, but there really wasn’t all that much to talk about: the 2012 Euro Final, Rangers in the 4th tier of Scottish soccer, a particularly silly season of summer transfers, the Sepp Blatter spin-machine in high gear – nope, not much at all.  Plus, a minute-by-minute recap, including all the gratuitous swear-y bits, from JT’s four day adventure in the Westminster Magistrates Court (kidding – only used it in the episode title to garner a few more downloads… sleazy, I know). While Eoin O’Callaghan is away in Munich, hobnobbing with German sporting royalty, the SREP decided to bring in its own ringer; the Queen of NA soccer broadcasting (if you will), Michelle Lissel.  This week Bobby and Michelle discuss the extraordinary events of ‘Survival Sunday’ in the Premier League.  QPR stay up, Bolton go down, and City claim a first top-flight title since 1968.  Manchester United look set for an off-season re-tooling of the midfield, because surely they won’t be relying on the likes of Paul Scholes for… oh… I see… never mind.  There’s late breaking news concerning ‘Big Eck’, rumours of Drogba winding up at WHL come August (you heard it here first), and a pair of esteemed soccer experts owning up to some pretty dodgy pre-season predictions (ah, the benefit of hindsight).

We’re no entomologists, but that’s not gonna stop us from sorting out our dying bees from our dying wasps.  This week, Chelsea add another cup to the trophy cabinet, while Liverpool’s dream of a ‘double’ dies. Roberto Mancini makes one counter-intuitive substitution and suddenly Yaya Toure and Co. are cruising toward the Premier League title. Over in Italy, the ‘Shroud of Calciopoli’ is lifted as the Turin giants recapture Scudetto glory.

It was not the title decider everyone was expecting, and it certainly wasn’t the most riveting Manchester derby ever witnessed, but Monday’s result at the Etihad Stadium sent Sky-blue hearts soaring.  Bobby & Eoin discuss what City got right, what United got wrong, and if this result really signifies a shift in power in the Premier League.  Also, the immanent appointment of Roy Hodgson as England manager has Bobby saying ‘right man, wrong timing’, while Eoin figures poor Roy is merely being fed to the (senior) lions.

EXCLUSIVE!  In his first interview since parting ways with Liverpool, Damien Comolli talks to Eoin O’Callaghan about criticism, failure, the future of the ‘Director of Football’ role and much more.  It’s an extensive, wide-ranging and eye-opening discussion.  Enjoy!

After an uncharacteristic slip by Manchester United (drawing 4-4 at home to Everton) and the inevitable win by Manchester City at Molineux (a 2-0 result that condemned Wolves to the Championship), the Premier League title race is back on; no matter what Roberto Mancini says.  City are now within 3 points of United and Eoin is predicting a ‘decisive’ Manchester Derby this coming weekend… Bobby (ever the pragmatist) predicts a draw.

Attention then turns to the PFA Awards, and the absurdity of a mid-season vote for an end of season gong.  (Truth be told, they probably did get about half the awards right).

Also, to clear-up one outstanding issue from the podcast: Bobby mistakenly refers to Tony Hibbert as ‘Terry Hibbert’, and then wonders where he’s heard that name before.  A quick check online returns the name of ‘Terry Hibbitt’, a member of Don Revie’s famous 1968 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup winning Leeds United side; who sadly passed away in 1994 (age 46).

This week on the pod we engage in a fascinating game of ‘Follow The Train Of Thought’, and it goes a little something like this… Jurgen Klopp’s middle name is Norbert, meaning his middle-nick-name would be ‘Nobby’, a name Bobby often confuses with Noddy, which was the first name of the lead singer Noddy Holder from 70′s glam-rock band Slade, who also had a round-faced buck-toothed guitarist named Dave Hill, who Eoin reckons looks a little like ESPN footie commentator Ian Darke (no disrespect)… Personally, I think Slade guitarist Dave Hill looks exactly like UK actor Timothy Spall (who, by the way, would easily be my pick to play the lead role in Harry Redknapp’s inevitable biopic).

Speaking of ‘Arry, we talk Spurs, Toffees, contentious FA Cup officiating, $35m Andy Carroll goals, rare non-Old-Firm Scottish Cup finals, AshleyYoung diving lessons, the limited shelf lives of some Aussies, Scousers & Geezers, and and a two-horse race for the scoring crown in La Liga.

This week we devote an entire podcast (well, most of it anyway) to Arsenal’s impressive home win over title hopefuls, Manchester City.  It’s a result that more-or-less spells the end of City’s run at the Premier League crown; and after another display of unbridled petulance, Balotelli’s adventure in the English top-flight might very well be over.

MLS is back, and with a new season comes a whole host of new names – and pronunciations – to add to your North American soccer lexicon.  Take Young Pyo Lee, for example. The experienced South Korean fullback looked great for Vancouver in his league debut (at home versus Montreal), but TV announcers are making a meal out of his hip new moniker; Y.P.  Sounds too much like ‘Wipey’ to us.  Can we maybe get him to insist on being called Young Pyo from now on?

After an exciting weekend of results across Europe, the big story that has everyone’s attention concerns the goings-on at Chelsea. The ‘Old Boys Club’ at Stamford Bridge got their wish; Andre Villas-Boas is out, and now (one has to assume) Mr. Abramovich’s message to the players is ‘it’s time to put upski or shut upski’ (loose Russian translation). Now, can Chelsea salvage something from the season under the temporary leadership of Roberto Di Matteo, or are sights already set on finding the next ‘new man, with a new vision’ for next year.

After another turbulent round of the FA Cup, we’re left with more questions than answers for what’s going on at both Chelsea & Arsenal, especially regarding the managers.  Bobby & Eoin are both convinced that a thoughtful change of wardrobe, perhaps, might just do the trick for Mr. Villas-Boas.  Arsene Wenger may be feeling the heat from his detractors, but at least he has sidelined-Wolves-loanee ‘Manu’ Frimpong to fight his twitter battles for him (I mean what else has he got going on – DEEEENCH!)

Who knew they actually played 90 minutes of football at Old Trafford on Saturday?  Personally, I tuned in for the ‘Suarez snub’ on Patrice Evra, and then checked back at halftime & at full-time to catch the tunnel bust-ups and ‘in-yer-face’ celebrations (only kidding).  The match ended in a deserved 2-1 victory for Man. United, but with a subplot that big, it’s easy to understand why the majority of the chatter focused on the events surrounding the game.  

We also get to hear Bobby & Eoin’s take on Mick McCarthy’s sacking at Wolves, Chelsea’s impromptu crisis talks with ‘Mr. Big’, Spurs’ man-handling of Newcastle, and ‘Arry Redknapp’s impending appointment to the England post.

There’s a quick look back at another weather-affected weekend of Serie A action.  AC Milan climbed back to the summit (albeit on account of Juve’s match with Bologna being post-poned) thanks to a comeback win over Udinese, and Inter lose yet again, this time at home to lowly Novara.  

We end the podcast with the extraordinary story of former Canadian international and former Canadian U20 coach, Paul James, and his decade long battle with crack cocaine addiction.  The details of James’ dual-life were made public on Monday, and if you want to read more, HERE’S A LINK to Neil Davidson’s article for The Canadian Press.

The magic of the FA Cup returned for another round (QPR v Chelsea excluded) and offered up some tantalizing topics for discussion; can Liverpool really claim 2 pieces of silverware this season, is Frazier Campbell’s career finally back on track after all those injuries, and does Arsene Wenger swear in English or French during his halftime talk? Bobby & Eoin analyze the best the 4th round had to offer.  Attention then turns to Italy, and the chase for the scudetto. Juventus continue to set the pace, while Ranieri’s Inter lose valuable ground away to Lecce.  The pod finishes with Bobby sounding a cautionary note to Canadian WNT supporters; just because they’ve qualified for the olympics, doesn’t mean they’ll medal.

OK, right off the bat I’m gonna warm you about this weeks podcast. This week the SREP welcomes Globe & Mail and New York Times columnist, John Doyle, onto the program.  John tells us all about his experiences as an Irish-Canadian football writer covering the beautiful game, both at home & abroad.  We also hear some of the anecdotes and inspirational events from John’s journey through the world of football that led to him write his best-selling book, “The World is a Ball”.  Bobby & Eoin get John’s take on the Euro 2012 Group Stage Draw, and even manage to cover-off some of the major talking points from the week that was in the BPL.  It’s our longest podcast yet, and it’s an absolute treat!

This week on the podcast, Bobby & Eoin pause to discuss the news of, and reaction to, the untimely death of Wales manager, and former Premier League great, Gary Speed.  

The guys also take a quick tour of the Carling Cup quarterfinals, examine Montreal Impact’s pursuit of Brian Ching, chat draws, dubious calls & goalline technology from the Premier League, and cap it all off with a fascinating story about an American Samoan centre-back.  There’s also a bit of hidden audio at the end (I recorded it on my gramophone – Poducer).

This week on the SREP, Bobby & Eoin offer up their opinions on MLS’ annual showpiece.  Eoin is critical of Houston’s lack of cutting edge, while Bobby distances himself from the mainstream footballing press’ praise for David Beckham’s performance on Sunday.  There’s also a look back at Premier League action from the weekend, and a look ahead to some critical midweek Champions League matchups.

Speaking of good stuff… I have been bugging Eoin for a while that he needs to sample a true Canadian delicacy, to really experience what it’s like to be Canadian.  He’s been in Canada for nearly 2 years, and he’s yet to give Kraft Dinner a try (I know!).  It took a bit of convincing, but I was able to get Eoin to agree to a little ‘cultural exchange’.  I’d whip up a pot of the good stuff, while he supplies the Barry’s Tea (straight from Ireland).  

I didn’t have any ‘Original’ KD, so ‘Sharp Cheddar’ would have to do.  I don’t think Eoin was very confident this was going to go very well.  I had to reassure him that it was perfectly safe to eat, even at 10am in the morning.  

Eoin forced down 1 bite.    

What a champ!  He said it had the consistency of earthworms(?), and that it was quite possibly the worst thing he’d ever eaten (and that’s including earthworms, I presume).  That’s one off the ol’ Canadiana Bucket List!

Eoin’s smiling, but not because he enjoyed the KD experience… he’s just relieved he didn’t suffer any internal organ failure.  The Barry’s Tea was excellent, BTW, and it fuelled a great podcast session. Cheers.

Monday morning during the taping of the podcast, Bobby McMahon admitted that every time he hears the name Corey Ashe (Houston Dynamo) he immediately thinks of 80′s Canadian Pop/Rock icon Corey Hart.  Funny how the mind makes those little associations. So, in the immortal words of Corey Ashe, “You can never surrender”, or was it, “I wear my sun glasses at night”? (Both work equally well).

Eoin is away, so Bobby is joined this week by FSR anchor Asa Rehman, and the two of them delve deep into the MLS Conference Finals.  Then it’s off to England for a look back at the matches that both kicked off and wrapped up Round 11 of the Premier League: Newcastle v. Everton and Fulham v. Tottenham.

On a special Halloween edition of the podcast, Bobby & Eoin review all four of the MLS Conference Semifinal – 1st leg matches, and really get to the bottom of Rafa’s Marquez’ theatrics at the end of the lacklustre NY/LA ‘dream’ showdown.  The guys then pick through, in no particular order, Arsenal’s big win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.  We wrap it up with a quick tour through the Serie A, and Juve’s emphatic win over Inter.  There’s also some live ‘rimshots’ punctuating to some pretty hefty jokes; hope it cracks a smile.  Also, be sure to contact us with your youtube/mp3 submissions for our search for an official SREP Band/Orchestra… Orchestras preferred, bands welcome. Also, as referred to in the pod, Bobby has found this confirmation of the best MLS game ever: “2003 MLS Cup playoffs – Los Angeles won the first game at home 2-0 in the two-game aggregate-goal series. In the second game in San Jose, the Galaxy scored two early goals to widen its aggregate lead to four goals, only to have San Jose score five unanswered goals to win the series 5-4. Many neutral MLS pundits at the time viewed that game as the best in league history. After eliminating the Galaxy, San Jose went on to defeat the Kansas City Wizards en route to winning its second MLS Cup title (over the Chicago Fire) in three years.”  And HERE is a link to some highlights of the comeback. In this week’s pod, Bobby McMahon, puts on his ‘prognosti-goggles’ (TM) and predicts that it’s only a matter of time before Big Brother (FIFA) eventually gains control of top-level club football – negating the need for clubs to negotiate their own foreign TV rights deals.  Returning to the present, we break-down Manchester United’s lucky draw at Anfield, and Eoin even wonders whether or not clubs need to deploy a defensive wall on free kicks anymore (I know, provocative right?).  The guys also embrace their inner ‘Arry and assess Newcastle’s performance versus Spurs, complete with butchered opponent’s names (enough to make an old ‘wheeler-dealer’ proud).  There’s also a quick stop in MLS to address Thierry Henry’s ridiculous red card, and the ever impressive crowds in Seattle (this time to see off the great Kasey Keller).  Don’t forget to leave your comments below, and if you’re accessing the podcast from iTunes, why not leave a comment and give us a rating there as well. Girl, you know it’s true!  Bobby & Eoin are back for another edition of the pod! This time they’re going on a trip around the globe, recapping all the important results from a weekend of international qualifiers.  Robbie Keane is out for Ireland, but up for karaoke, Argentina are looking good (going in one direction, at least), Otto Pfister says T&T have nothing to be nervous about, while poor South Africa don’t know what’s going on.  The guys also break-down Philly’s impressive win over Seattle in MLS action, and sneak in a couple of laughs as well.  Enjoy!
